SUBTERFUGE - 'Heat' CD EP - Release date: April 2nd 2020
SUBTERFUGE - HEAT - CD EP
Label: Heartland Records (HLCD15). Release Date: April 2nd 2020. “Where gothic takes a new dimension. Classy, catchy and addictive” is how Subterfuge were described by Belgian magazine ‘Dark Entries’ when reviewing the 2017 album “Blind to Reason” and to enable that addiction Subterfuge are releasing a CD in March 2020. The CD is a 6 track EP/Mini Album and opens with a ‘gothed up’ cover version of the classic 1983 Soft Cell song “Heat”. Also on the CD are 3 new original tracks (The Empty Embrace, Apathy, As Strong As Your Weakness) plus a remix of “Heat” and a 1997 live recording of Subterfuge covering another song, this time The Sisters of Mercy track “Body Electric”. The CD is a factory pressed silver disc and is limited to just 200 copies worldwide and each one is hand numbered. This latest offering delivers all that you’d want and expect from Subterfuge, guitar based goth rock with customary deep vocals which are very natural and never trying. Combine that with their subtle use of keyboards and a distinguished dark melodic quality ensues. Subterfuge are still classy, still catchy and depending on your vices, still very much addictive. Track Listing: Heat The Empty Embrace Apathy As Strong As Your Weakness Heat (Blood and Sand mix) Body Electric (live 1997) |

SUBTERFUGE - A brief history
Subterfuge is a goth/alternative band that was formed in Melbourne, Australia way back in the early 1990's by Clifford Ennis along with Rick Mullen and Brendan Toull. They briefly grew to a 4 piece in 1993 before another line up change which saw Subterfuge settling on the duo of Clifford and Rick.
After releasing a demo tape in 1993 they were approached by Heartland Records and a CD "Darkland Awakening" was released in 1994 which was critically acclaimed at the time and led to them being described as "Australia's finest in gothic rock".
Despite the expectation of a follow up release the only offerings were songs released on some compilation albums. A long break ensued as Clifford focused his attentions to other projects (mainly as guitarist in IKON which has since toured Europe on numerous occasions). Then in 2013 a 16 track CD album entitled "Reflect<<Rewind" (a collection of Subterfuge material up to that point) was released by European label Strobelight Records.
Subterfuge were back in the studio recording new material and in 2017 released their album "Blind to Reason" available on both CD and LP and has them returning to the Heartland Records label. While it's mainly Clifford in the driving seat these days one third of "Blind to Reason" was still penned by the original duo of Clifford and Rick and sees Subterfuge evolve (as one would expect after 20 odd years) to, dare I say, a slightly more sophisticated sound but still dark, still very much goth and still saturated in glorious melancholy both musically and lyrically.
2020 sees Subterfuge return with a 6 track CD EP entitled "Heat". The title track being a cover of the classic 1983 song by Soft Cell. There are 2 versions of "Heat", 3 original tracks and a live version of Body Electric (The Sisters of Mercy) from 1997. The CD is limited to 200 copies.
